Getting Started with DWT Packages

These instructions will show you how to use DWT Packages. You are required to have FrontPage 2003+.

You may use DWT Packages if:

  1. You have an existing web site based on DWTs and want to apply the DWT design.
  2. You have an existing web site that is not based on DWTs and want to apply the DWT design.
  3. You don't have a web site and want to start from scratch (a DWT Web Package may be easier to start with)

Also look below for more resources.

Option 1 - Existing Web Site Based on DWTs

  1. Download.
The download that you receive will be in .zip format. Save the download to your computer (note the location so that you can find it!). You will need a utility such as WinZip to extract to a folder. After you've done this, open the folder.
  2. Install Theme, If Necessary.
If your product includes a Theme, you will see an .exe included within the zip folder. Double-click the .exe and follow the prompts to install for FrontPage 2003.
  3. Import.
    Open
your existing web site in FrontPage. Open Windows Explorer and browse to the download location. Within the folder should be another folder called "yourproduct_dwt." Drag this folder and drop it into your web's Folder List so that it is imported into your root web folder.
  4. Attach the DWT.
You may attach DWTs to one page at a time (recommended for your first page to make sure it works!) or to several pages at once.
    1. One page: Open your web site in FrontPage 2003. Open one of the pages in Design View. Select Format > Dynamic Web Template > Attach Dynamic Web Template. Browse to the "yourproduct_dwt" folder and choose the template you want to apply. Click "Open."
    2. Several pages: Open your Folder List, if not already open, by going to View > Folder List. Hold down the Ctrl key and click on each file name that you want to convert. Let go of the Ctrl key when you're done. Go to Format > Dynamic Web Template > Attach Dynamic Web Template. Browse to the "yourproduct_dwt" folder and choose the template you want to apply to all of these pages. Click "Open."
  5. Assign Content, If Necessary.
If your web site is DWTIG-Compliant and you are applying a DWTIG-Compliant template, you will not have this step:
A pop-up screen will come up to allow you to assign content to regions. It will list your existing regions from the "old" layout. You will have to double-click each region and assign it to the correct region in the "new" layout. Please see the table above for a description of the included regions. After assigning the regions, click OK. You should see the new design take effect!
  6. Apply Theme, If Necessary.
If your package includes a FrontPage Theme, you will need to apply the Theme for the complete look and feel. Go to Format > Theme, then choose the Business Synergy theme. Choose "Apply as Default Theme." Click OK when prompted.
  7. Begin Editing!
You may now open your pages and begin editing in the "editable regions." You should check the template's included "readme" file for specific instructions about adding your logo, changing the copyright statement, or making other changes.

Option 2: Existing Web Site Not Based on DWTs

Note - we cover these steps, with diagrams, in another tutorial.

  1. Prep work.
You will have to do some prep work to "strip" your pages of design elements. Please see our tutorial here for more details.
  2. Download.
The download that you receive will be in .zip format. Save the download to your computer (note the location so that you can find it!). You will need a utility such as WinZip to extract to a folder. After you've done this, open the folder.
  3. Install Theme, If Necessary.
If your product includes a Theme, you will see an .exe included within the zip folder. Double-click the .exe and follow the prompts to install for FrontPage 2003.
  4. Import.
    Open
your existing web site in FrontPage. Open Windows Explorer and browse to the download location. Within the folder should be another folder called "yourproduct_dwt." Drag this folder and drop it into your web's Folder List so that it is imported into your root web folder.
  6. Assign Content.
A pop-up screen will come up to allow you to assign content to regions. It will list your one "body" region from the "old" layout. Double-click the "body" region and change the "New Region" dropdown to "body1." Click OK. You should see the new design take effect!
  7. Apply Theme, If Necessary.
If your package includes a FrontPage Theme, you will need to apply the Theme for the complete look and feel. Go to Format > Theme, then choose the Business Synergy theme. Choose "Apply as Default Theme." Click OK when prompted.
  8. Begin Editing!
You may now open your pages and begin editing in the "editable regions." You should check the template's included "readme" file for specific instructions about adding your logo, changing the copyright statement, or making other changes.

Option 3: Starting from Scratch

If your package includes a DWT Web Package (with a FrontPage Web Template included), we advise that you use the DWT Web Package to get started. This will allow you to create a starter web site with pre-formatted pages and sample content. The DWT Web Packages may also include extra components like Flash or Swish movies that are not included with the standard DWT Package. However, you may use the method described below to obtain a web site with the provided layout if you do not require the additional components or starter pages.

  1. Create a one-page web.
Create a new FrontPage web site using the "One Page" template. (Learn how)
  5. Attach the DWT.
Open your web site in FrontPage 2003. Open the index page in Design View. Select Format > Dynamic Web Template > Attach Dynamic Web Template. Browse to the "yourproduct_dwt" folder and choose the template you want to apply. Click "Open."
You may now open this pages and begin editing in the "editable regions." You should check the template's included "readme" file for specific instructions about adding your logo, changing the copyright statement, or making other changes.
  9. Adding More Pages.
If you want to add another page using the same DWT, you may use the index page and go to File > Save As. Save as another page, then drag it into Navigation View so that the navigation menu will show up. If you want to add another page using a different DWT, simply hit "Ctrl-N" to create a new blank page, then follow steps 5-7 to attach the DWT. Save your new page and drag it into Navigation View so that the navigation menu will show up.
